Original quiz from MOUSEcky.

1. Please introduce yourself.
Hello hello~ I am Xochii, webmistress of Zombieish if you somehow didn't know already. I love fashion and music alot, to say the least. I generally love to create and I try to live life to the fullest.
2. How long have you been making websites?
Properly making sites? Not too long, honestly. Maybe about 4 years ago. If you count caard and wix and making layouts for a myspace clone, it's been quite a long time, actually!
3. And what got you into the hobby?
General fascination with web design. I've been messing around with web design for a while through caard and wix and stuff, but when I started making layouts, it got that thought into my head that was like, "Hey, I can actually make this look pretty cool." But I didn't really get too into it until joining a coding bootcamp and starting this site, admittedly!
4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
I LOVE reading blogs. And I love sites where it is a little hub for all of their interests. I love seeing this kind of stuff.
5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
I plan sometimes. I carry a sketchbook with me that is halfway full with site doodles and stuff. I sometimes draw a general idea, and then look for inspiration as I go. I like to include sentimental things in my design like family heirlooms and general important things in my life. Its my way of immortalizing them.
6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
I actually don't have alot of inspirations for sites as a whole, its a whole mishmash of ideas and things I have seen from being on the internet as long as I have been. So many album covers, shirt designs, and general music are part of this inspiration aswell.
7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
I really love seeing everything come together with CSS and images. I use images for alot of things, actually.
8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
Probably motivation and trying to keep everything front-end. I have this weird thing where if I don't have the design done first, I cannot do the content. It should 100% be the opposite, but its just the way my brain works, I guess.
9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
Most pages will have the same general frame and structure, but entirely different designs. Some pages will be entirely different, though.
10. How confident are you with CSS?
Pretty confident! I read through CSS documentation alot aswell as playing around with it, so I think I have a fairly decent handle on it.
11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
Now I do. I didn't even know this was a tag and I have multiple Web dev certificates, haha.
12. What is your favourite HTML element?
<br>. Sorry. I know it isnt exactly good practice to have <br> everywhere, but boy, is it useful.
13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
Make a simple boilerplate and css structure for the basic layout. Its what I did for this site around 5 times when restarting.
14. Do you know JavaScript?
Yes I do!
15. How about PHP?
I do not. I plan to get into backend more soon.
16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
Sometimes? My main two themes are Pink/Red and black. Certain pages/sections will have their own unique themes though.
17. Are you more focused on content or design?
I like to think both, but I think I have more of a design focus than most people would have.
18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
I don't, and whoever bought zombieish.com, fuck you for thinking I would get that and trying to get more money out of me! I'm not getting a .com domain. I do really plan on it.
19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
I LOVE them. My website is a little retro themed but more in the golden age of web design.
20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
Yes it is! I always check.
21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
I love buttons! But its definitely hard to make something that fits in something so, so tiny. I think I like buttons more for random little graphics rather than for a site. I'd love to be one of those sites that has buttons in the footer, but I don't have enough space for that.
22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
I like them, but it can look cluttered. I like them for fun stuff, but I think I like when people describe why they like a site next to it. Like my bff said (I'm not copying him, I do really think this) I like when you can see that someone cares for said other site, rather than putting their button up just cuz the other person added their button. I like seeing sites the webmaster actually likes and reccommends and actively follows.
23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
Honestly, I'm not sure.. Starting over isn't really an option that I can tangibly think of because I am literally in the process of doing so now. But since I just did, I liked my previous design, so.. I just made it better.
24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
Sometimes. But thats only in terms of content and motivation. Some people have such cool sites and can update their sites so much.. It makes me a little jealous.
25. What text editor do you use?
VScodium/VScode. I honestly hate this and I am only using it for the ease of Live Server, and having a side bar with my directory.
26. Why do you use that one?
Its the only thing that works well on this Lubuntu chromebook.
27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
EVeryTHing IS LOCAL. Say for example, giphy or imgur goes down. EVERYTHInG IS GONE.
28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
I think it's nice to have options. I never used nekoweb, personally and I honestly have no interest in moving. So I never checked it out. If and when I move, it won't be hosted on either.
29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
Both are unfinished. But both take up about 30mb. I'm excited to see when it will be finished.
30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
Yes, yes, YES!!!!!!!!!! I code to-go on a shitty chrultrabook and then at home (sometimes) on my desktop. I almost always have airplane mode on the chrultrabook, so I use a flashdrive to transfer everything. So I have about three backups at all times. ESPECIALLY in case of a power outage or eventually EMMC degradation or sudden SSD death.
31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
I like both! But I love seeing what people can do with web design.
32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
I looove neons and deep, dark edgy colours. I guess it's just a preference, I do deviate from those often, though.
33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
Yes I have. Someone from my past emailed me through here for a few months and revealed their true identity later. I thought about deleting the site for a month straight before I decided to stop giving a shit.
34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
I do! I think in the way that I am more technical about it, it is solitary, but I do have a handful of webmaster friends. Its fun!
35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
Yes, a few, and I wish some didn't know.
36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
I want to... By the time this is live, I hope I will be able to more. I sometimes went on month long breaks.
37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
I do not! I don't see myself doing so for the forseeable future, I like my web design now.
38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
Ummm.... I think its more me focused? Theres alot of hobbies in here. But its all *my* opinions and *my* way of doing stuff.
39. Do you do web design professionally?
I used to. I've been out of work in general for a while.
40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
Currently unemployed and fucking suffering.
41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
YES! Yes I do! And I love emailing people. I lack alot of deep connections in my personal life, (I have a few and they are very deep, I just don't have alot) so I love long-winded email exchanges.
42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
I guess? I have accounts but I don't use them. But my website IS a replacement for social media.
43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
I like them. I text everyone on Signal. I try to avoid discord.
44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
Yes I do! I don't have any set coding music, I listen to whatever. By the time this is up, my music log should be ready for viewing.
45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
Just one.
46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
MANY!!! I love having alot of reading material
47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
It's my real self, but some things about me will always be hidden ;)
48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
Yes! Yes I have! And I'm very happy about it
49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
Kind of. I guess my issues with CSS and HTML are deep rooted fundamental issues.
50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
Unless you are just experimenting, something needs to be temporary, or have everything on one file to demonstrate something, I don't think you should put the style and script tags in the html file aswell.
51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
Comment your code and structure it in a nice readable way so you know what you are doing!!!!!
52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
Generic structure. Semantics messed up my layout a bit, weirdly.
53. Do you consider different browsers?
I guess? Brave and firefox are my two main browsers.
54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
I test everything on firefox, brave, and sometimes chrome. I never test on safari. Chrome is a bloated piece of shit from my experience. Some things work oddly on both firefox and brave, but I do like that I can reroute the basic google search on firefox to use the "old google search." But I forgot the technicalities of how to do that. Firefox also does not have a perpetual bookmarks tab. I would never use safari EVER.
55. And what OS are you on?
Lubuntu on the laptop, MACos on another laptop, Lubuntu/Windows 10 dualboot PC at home.
56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
Well as an aspiring technician (and nerd), I like to test everything on different OSes. Lubuntu is only because the chrultrabook EMMC is 16 GB (around 14 with degradation), but then I decided to keep using the same OS for ease of use.
57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
No... and I don't plan on it. Mobile friendly websites are kinda atrocious to me and sucks the fun out of web design. I also don't do it because I want to gravitate away from my phone.
58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
I'm sorry.... its nostalgic but I fucking hate it and mute it everytime.
59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
I love webrings!! I am!
60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
I don't, not yet atleast. I like to see the history of something, aswell as the persons passion for the subject.
61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
Maybe. I use the basic header and content structure.
62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
I don't really have an ideal, honestly... And I can't really think of what that would be.
63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
Yes yes YES! I draw nearly everything, unless I commission someone because I can't stand drawing something, haha....
64. What are your favourite resource sites?
I love the people who archive buttons and other graphics. I only used Sewerwolfx's collection of icons, buttons, and IMVU buttons, aswell as Lelia's IMVU buttons. I used a few icons from Anakin who archives and makes icons.
65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
Probably putting everything in one big CSS docu. I can't be assed to make a different one for each site section and it might be best to keep most there, as a few sections reuse graphics.
66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
READ DOCUMENTATION! Experiment with code, as its how you will truly understand how to code, you learn from doing, not reading. I really recommend you code your own layout so you understand what is what, aswell. The inspect feature is on most browsers and is so powerful and useful. I often "pick apart" websites to see how someone does it. I often draw the structure out on paper, aswell.
67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
I keep all styling in CSS. Some is hardcoded if it is temporary.
68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
I think its a little boring... but it can be done right. It seems to work more for mobile websites.
69. How about table-based layouts?
I used tables for a long time until recently. I like them, but from my standpoint, goddamn, are they frustrating. Save yourself the time and effort, and use <span> and <div> instead. Even better, use CSS grid!
70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
Hehe yes I do! I guess I'm not subscribed, but I do like using them.
71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
Both, an equal amount of time. But I probably spend more time on CSS.
72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
Haha... No.... not really. I think even my .txt files are styled.
73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
I only make layouts when the need arises.. sometimes I can struggle on a desing.
74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
Advanced with imposter syndrome.
75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
Yes I do! I love seeing how things work and *how* someone implemented something. Spoono.com is a website I often did this with. Alot of older websites were generated with macromedia fireworks. From a graphic design point, I think they are AWESOME! They can be utilized well! But from a web-dev stand point... eh......
76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
It was a hobby at first. And then I taught myself to code by reading documentation and w3schools. I joined a coding bootcamp in highschool which taught me ALOT.
77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
I used to... I used to have some REALLY fucked up HTML. I haven't really had the need to do that since switching away from tables.
78. Thoughts on floating elements?
They can be in the way if responsiveness wasn't tested well enough. But otherwise I think they are pretty cool.
79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
Px, unfortunately. Em never worked the way I wanted it to.
80. Do you have a favourite font?
I love VT323.
81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
Maybe not.... I like to know exactly how my site works and I don't want to deal with fixing fucked up code all the time and the other person getting mad at me for that. There have also been times at work where I got scolded for something simply "not looking good", I kept putting said CSS back because it kept disappearing with no communication.
82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
Not as often because I sink alot of time into coding, but I love surfing older websites more, admittedly.
83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
I would feel so flattered! I usually don't, because firefox doesnt have an always visible bookmarks tab. But, I remember domains well, or keep them here on my site.
84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
Haha, I'm not too sure! But maybe the graphics.. I drew everything and I'm proud!
85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
Yes yes yes I am! I am studying to be a technician! I don't collect, though. I have a box of spare computer parts under my bed in a cutesy looking box for repairs. Usually harvested from junk computers I find on the road.
86. How often and for how long are you online?
Constantly. Not looking at screens constantly, but my work is online, my leisure is online, my friends are online... my games are on screens, my website is on a screen.. my music is electronic. But I guess music is always going to be electronic, even when analog. Am I thinking about this too hard?
87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
Hehe I don't really have a target audience... There are some things here that would repulse or alienate one "target audience" and please another. There is no target audience, unless the target is me.
88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
Kind of. No idea what I would use it for, though.
89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
Yes yes I do! I haven't, not yet. I have attempted to write a program for simple automation but I realized manually doing it would actually be alot faster than programming it..
90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
I've never used one, unless WIX and Carrd count.. not in my professional lifetime, no. I think they're useful!
91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
I don't. Because theres no way that can be entirely accurate. I think I prefer more personal things like guestbooks.
92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
I lurk everywhere. I don't feel like making new accounts. last.fm is kind of a forum/used to be, eh? I usually lurk Linux and other tech forums the most.
93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
I had a boilerplate template for the "box style" pages on my site. But I don't really need it as I made all the pages I wanted to.
94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
It would be cool to hear that! I've had alot of people say that in person but they never look at my site agian. LMAO.
95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
Yes I have! Kind of..? Its nice to see how far I've grown, but wow, some of the shit I as butt ugly or barely missed the mark.
96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
I'm not sure.. I'd probably leave an archive.
97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
I actually think I reveal way too much. But I'm still a bit secretive.
98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
First link on my links section hehe
99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
LMAO I do not. I take a huge compression ray to them all. And then overlay 5 filters.
100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
I haven't answered 100 questions in a long time! That was really fun! My hand fucking hurt, though!
